A Complete Guide to Installing Low-Voltage Transformers for Outdoor Lighting

Low-voltage transformers are essential for all outdoor landscape lighting systems. They provide reliable power to outdoor lights and make any outdoor environment shine bright.

This week’s blog is a short, comprehensive guide to installing low-voltage transformers for outdoor landscape lighting. Read on for simple instructions and get tips on how to perfect low-voltage transformer installation.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Low-Voltage Transformers

Tools Needed for Installation

  • Masonry screws and anchors
  • Drill
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire strippers
  • Wire
  • Screwdriver
  • Measuring tape
  • Terminal adapter
  • Marking pencil
  • Optional: Wooden post for mounting transformer if you don’t want to install on a wall, timer or photocell, weatherproof box, conduit

  1. Scouting for the Perfect Spot

Find an area for the transformer that is near a GFCI outlet and the outdoor light fixtures. You can also try to find a spot where the transformer can be concealed, but also easily accessible in case there are issues or repairs need to be made.

  1. Mounting the Transformer

Mount the transformer 12 inches above the ground on a wall or a wooden post to protect it from water damage.

  • Remove one of the knockouts at the bottom of the transformer.
  • Insert terminal adapter.
  • Use a marking pencil to mark the top and bottom of the transformer on the wall or post.
  • Drill a hole about 1 inch deep into the wall or post at the marks.
  • Insert masonry screw and anchor into the top hole.
  • Hang the transformer onto the screw and tighten the screw to secure it.
  • Insert masonry screw and anchor at the hole at the bottom of the transformer. Secure the bottom of the transformer.

Optional: Although transformers are built to be durable and weatherproof, you can place the transformer in an area that has a covering or in a weatherproof box to further protect it from exposure to the elements.

  1. Connecting the Wires

After mounting the transformer in an ideal location, connect the wires. It is important to confirm that the transformer is unplugged and not on during these steps to prevent harm from electrical shocks.

  • Use a measuring tape to determine how much wire is needed from the ground to the transformer. Leave a bit of extra wire in case there are problems in the future.
  • Use wire cutters to cut the length of wire needed.

Optional: Run the wires through a conduit for added protection and organization. Secure the conduit into the transformer.

  • Fill in the trench made to bury the wire.
  • Separate the two ends of the wire.
  • With wire strippers, cut off an inch of the wire’s jacket, leaving an inch of copper conductor exposed.
  • Twist the conductorsso there aren’t any frays.
  • Unscrew the common terminal.
  • Insert one of the exposed wires into the common terminal (labeled COM). Tighten the screwto secure the wire.
  • Unscrew the appropriate voltage tap.
  • Insert the other exposed wire intothe appropriate voltage tap. Use a higher voltage tap for longer wire runs. Tighten the screw to secure the wire.
  1. Installing Photocells or Timers into the Transformer

Some low-voltage transformers may already come with built-in photocells or timers. If your transformer doesn’t have one, follow the steps below to install one.

Timer:

  • Plug the receptacle into the timer.
  • Plug the timer into the transformer.
  • Set the timer to the desired

Photocell:

  • Remove side knockout.
  • Insert photocell through the knockout hole.
  • Secure the photocell with a washer.
  • Plug in the photocell into the appropriate socket.
  • Remove any guards on the photocell, and it is ready to use.
  1. Testing the System:

After making the wire connections, plug in the transformer and power it on. Inspect the outdoor landscape lighting system to confirm that the lights are on and are functioning properly.

Optional: If the transformer has smart capabilities, test Wi-Fi signal strength at the transformer’s installation site to ensure reliable connectivity. App-based controls are going to be beneficial and advantageous for your clients.
